Interior Book Layout
BOOK INTERIOR LAYOUT & TYPESETTING
Book interior design and typesetting is the art (and science!) of laying out a manuscript to uniquely suit the content of a book. It makes sense to have the same designer you trust to create your cover, to also perform the book interior design work; developing a harmonious and tasteful look between the book interior design and book cover design.
Competitive prices and no “setup fees”
We offer very competitive rates on book interior design & typesetting, and the quality of our work will stand beside mainstream publishing standards, as do all my offerings.
To provide you with a quote, we’ll need your completed manuscript, preferably as an MS Word doc, and emailed to us as an attachment. This way, our quote for your book’s interior design is based on your own unique requirements.
BOOK INDEXING
A book’s index should help the reader find useful information quickly and easily. It’s not simply a list of the words and phrases, but also an organized grouping of like concepts.
My book indexing services provide thoughtfully structured indices that accurately reflect the content of your book, and is formatted to compliment your books style and specifications.
Book Indexing Fees
My indexing fees are based on a per page basis, ranging from $2.00 to $6.00 per indexable page, and we’ll require the completed manuscript to offer a quote unique to your project requirements.
An indexable page is really any of your book’s pages that contains useful and relevant information to your readers, including pictures, figures or graphs, please convey any specific preferences with your request for quote.
How to prepare your manuscript for typesetting
Weuse software applications specifically designed for creating books (among other things) for print such as Adobe. MS Word and other word processors while typically wonderful for writing manuscripts, lack the controls and features for successful print design.
Please send your completed manuscript as a single document–not individual chapter files, and do try to have your spell checking and editing finished before sending off your manuscript for typesetting. There’s still always the inevitable stray typo to correct at proof time, but don’t fret…that’s normal.
There’s no need to format your manuscript, the only real do’s and don’ts I’ll mention involve interior images and tables:
Interior photo’s and artwork: Please don’t embed images – use art references/directives instead. For example, instead of embedding “picture01.jpg” into the manuscript, place a simple notation such as [INSERT picture01.jpg here]. Then place any captions immediately below where you’ve referenced an image placement, beginning the line with [CAPTION] is sure to get my attention!
Example:
[INSERT picture01.jpg here]
[CAPTION The author having lunch with the President.]
Tables and charts: When preparing tables or charts, please keep the trim size in mind; that brilliant table that looked so good on an 8.50? x 11? sheet could be too small to read once it’s scaled down to a size that will fit on a book’s page. Also, book interiors are generally printed in grayscale so it’s helpful to set up your table or chart using shades of black to avoid unintended results, and whenever possible, allow rows to break across pages.
Turnaround: There is a 3-7 day turnaround time depending upon the book and if all the information is available. A rush fee of $150 will apply to any jobs that need to take two days or less.
