Available Internships
We will be accepting interns shortly for the Fall of 2013. Please check back in May 2013 for application and internship information. Please read our expectations and then scroll down to read more about the available internships. Virtual internships also available: Skype, Google+ etc.
Thank you for your interest in ZLS Publishing.
Our Expectations:
We take our internship program very seriously here at ZLS. We understand that an internship is sometimes the only way an intern will get the opportunity to get into the field they are interested in. We believe internships should be teachable moments and so we provide our interns with the opportunity to receive hands-on experience in a variety of departments and to polish their communication talents in an intimate, supervised atmosphere.
We seek interns who are motivated to learn about the book publishing industry from the unique perspective of an independent book publisher. Our publishing internship is an opportunity to learn about all aspects of book publishing in a small, friendly environment. Our interns will get the chance to gain experience and develop skills reading and evaluating book proposals; writing clear, effective copy, including catalog copy, press materials, and blog posts; contributing to author/book publicity and marketing campaigns; as well as helping with periodic mailings and various administrative tasks.
All credit is college credit only. Sophomores and up. Interns work between 6-15 hours a week.
If given the opportunity to intern with ZLS, the following will be expected of you. In the event that while interning you do not meet our expectations, your internship may be terminated.
Expectation 1:
Be professional. Treat this internship as if it were a job. Keep in mind that you don’t know who your internship boss knows. Don’t burn a bridge by being unprofessional.
Expectation 2:
Have a passion for books/reading in addition to whatever you are in school learning. We find that students who are full of passion do better in this type of internship than those that aren’t. Those students who take the attitude that this is another class do not do well here in our internship program.
Expectation 3:
Ask questions, assume nothing. Publishing changes more often than you can keep up with.
Expectation 4:
Writing skills along with Word processing skills (MS Office); Internet research skills, ability to work independently, organizational skills, flexibility to perform a variety of tasks needed in each department.
Expectation 5:
Reliability and punctuality. Interns are expected to call if something prevents them from coming in at the agreed time. No call no show will result in your internship being terminated. We have a zero tolerance policy on no call, no show.
